Polyester Filament Yarns — FDY & POY

Made-to-order polyester filament yarns for textile manufacturing, including FDY (Fully Drawn Yarn) and POY (Partially Oriented Yarn). Specifications can be produced according to required denier, filament count, lustre, colour and end application.

Industrial supply direct from the mill: Elmika coordinates production against customer specifications and arranges delivery from the producing mill to the nominated destination.

What Are Polyester Filament Yarns?

Polyester filament yarns are continuous synthetic yarns produced from polyester polymer. Unlike spun yarn, which is made from short staple fibres, filament yarn consists of long continuous filaments.

Different production stages create different yarn types. FDY is fully drawn and ready for direct textile processing, while POY is partially oriented and is normally used as an intermediate yarn for further drawing, texturing or other processing.

FDY — Fully Drawn Yarn

What Is FDY?

Fully Drawn Yarn is polyester filament yarn that has been fully drawn during production to achieve stable molecular orientation and dimensional consistency.

It is generally supplied ready for weaving, knitting and other textile manufacturing processes.

Key Characteristics

  • Smooth filament structure
  • Good tensile strength
  • Dimensional stability
  • Low shrinkage options where required
  • Consistent processing performance
  • Available in different lustres and constructions

Typical FDY Applications

Apparel & Fashion Textiles

  • Woven fabrics
  • Knitted fabrics
  • Linings
  • Fashion textiles
  • Lightweight fabrics

Industrial & Home Textiles

  • Upholstery fabrics
  • Home furnishings
  • Narrow fabrics
  • Industrial textile structures
  • Technical applications

POY — Partially Oriented Yarn

What Is POY?

Partially Oriented Yarn is a polyester filament yarn produced with partial molecular orientation.

POY is normally not the final textile yarn. It is commonly used as feed yarn for additional processing such as drawing or texturing.

Typical Uses of POY

  • Production of DTY
  • Further drawing and texturing
  • Specialised filament processing
  • Intermediate textile manufacturing

FDY vs POY

Parameter FDY POY
Full Name Fully Drawn Yarn Partially Oriented Yarn
Production Stage Fully drawn and stabilised Partially oriented
Primary Use Direct weaving, knitting and textile production Further processing
Structure Smooth continuous filament Continuous filament requiring additional processing
Typical Next Stage Fabric production Drawing or texturing, including DTY production

FDY, POY and DTY — What Is the Difference?

Yarn Description Typical Characteristic
FDY Fully drawn polyester filament yarn Smooth, stable and ready for textile processing
POY Partially oriented polyester filament yarn Intermediate material for further processing
DTY Draw textured polyester yarn Bulk, softness, crimp and controlled stretch

Need Help with the Specification?

If you do not have a complete technical specification, provide the intended textile application and any existing yarn data you have.

We can discuss the requirement with the producing mill and identify suitable manufacturing options.

Made-to-Order Industrial Supply

Elmika supplies polyester filament yarns against customer requirements rather than from standard retail stock.

Once the yarn specification and commercial terms are agreed, production is arranged with the manufacturing mill and the finished yarn is shipped directly to the customer’s nominated destination.
